Tomatillos are sometimes known as green tomatoes, although they are not actually tomatoes. They are a fruit that is grown as an annual throughout the Western Hemisphere. Tomatillos originated in Mexico, and are a staple in Latin American cuisine.

Typically, tomatillos are served crushed as an ingredient to make salsa verde, a green salsa that is most popular as a chip dip or sauce. Salsa verde is to Mexican cuisine what tomato sauce is to Italian food.
